Pathways China: A New Approach to Experiential Education
Building Networks, Understanding Systems, and Preparing Students for Lifelong Success
This year marks an exciting milestone: the grand opening of Pathways China. After months of development, curriculum design, and partnership building, we are thrilled to officially launch our experiential education programs for international school students across China.
Our journey began with a simple question: What if outdoor education could be more than just adventure? What if it could fundamentally change how students understand themselves, their relationships, and the systems that shape their world?
At Pathways China, we believe that success—at home, at school, in careers, and throughout life—is not achieved alone. Every meaningful accomplishment is built on relationships, understanding, and collaboration. Yet most outdoor education programs treat trips as interchangeable experiences: hiking here, climbing there, zip-lining everywhere. The location changes, but the underlying philosophy often does not.
We set out to build something different.
Beyond the Generic Adventure Model
The outdoor education landscape in China has grown significantly over the past decade. Established providers like Keystone Adventures, founded in 2012, now offer programs in more than 50 locations across the country . Indier Outdoor Education, operating since 2010, has built a regional network spanning China and Asia Pacific with offices in Shenzhen, Yangshuo, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Chiang Mai . Insight Adventures, formed through a merger in 2010, offers programs across dozens of destinations from Anji to Xi'an .
These organizations have made meaningful contributions to getting students outdoors. They offer rock climbing, hiking, kayaking, and cultural experiences. They partner with prestigious international schools across Asia . They deserve credit for pioneering experiential education in this region.
But we noticed something missing.
Many programs, while professionally run, operate on what we call the "activity menu" model. Choose your location. Choose your activities. Add some educational language. The result is often a memorable adventure—but is it a transformative learning experience? Does it teach students how to observe systems, build networks, and apply skills beyond the trip?
The Pathways Difference
At Pathways China, we start with a different question: What do students actually need to succeed?
Our curriculum is built on two interconnected frameworks:
The Circles of Influence helps students understand that they sit at the center of concentric circles of relationships—from family and peers to mentors, communities, and the global stage. The size and scope of any problem determines which circle(s) a student must activate. This framework draws on Stephen Covey's Circle of Influence model, distinguishing between what we can control, what we can influence, and what lies beyond our control.
The Three C's—Connection, Communication, and Collaboration—provides the practical skills students need to activate their Circles of Influence effectively. Connection builds trust. Communication enables clarity. Collaboration turns trust and clarity into action.
Every activity in a Pathways China program is intentionally designed to develop systems thinking and reinforce the Three C's. When students build a Chinese trebuchet (hundunpao), they're not just having fun with engineering—they're understanding mechanical systems, practicing collaboration, and connecting to historical context . When students navigate a hike, they're reading topographic systems, understanding watersheds, and building trust with their group.
We don't just offer adventure. We offer a philosophy.
Learning That Lasts
Perhaps the most significant difference is our commitment to reflection. Research consistently shows that learning is not complete until it is reflected upon . Yet many programs treat reflection as an afterthought—a quick journal entry or a casual debrief.
At Pathways China, reflection is central to every program day. Students complete structured workbook activities that guide them to observe systems, identify connections, and apply the Three C's to real situations they experienced. Small group reflections help students articulate what they learned and how they can use it beyond the program.
Because what students learn on a Pathways China program comes home with them.
The student who learns to communicate across cultural barriers in a Chinese village will be better prepared to collaborate with international colleagues in their future career. The student who practices active listening and clarifying questions during team challenges will be a better leader and team member in their university group projects. The student who maps community systems and identifies stakeholders will approach complex problems with systems thinking throughout their life.
Welcoming International and Bilingual Schools
As we open our doors, we invite international schools and teachers to join us in this new approach to experiential education. We are not simply offering trips. We are offering a pathway to understand how to succeed—built on strong networks, clear communication, and collaborative action.
Our programs are designed primarily for secondary students, with activities that challenge and inspire. We prioritize safety as our first action, not a backup plan. We reach every student and practice what we teach: honest connections, transparent communication, and respectful collaboration.
Whether your students are exploring karst landscapes in Yangshuo, navigating river valleys, or engaging with local communities through service projects, they will return with more than memories. They will return with skills that last a lifetime.
